Of course Designer allows you to add many different kinds of gradients, like elliptical, radial or conical and I highly recommend that you get yourself familiar with them, to really grasp the power of gradient creation in Affinity Designer.

In this project we will create a simple character icon. Along the way we will use some clipping and transformations, but most of all we will be using the Pen tool.
